mtDNA Haplogroups

MtDNA haplogroups are created by grouping people with similar mtDNA that can be traced back to common ancestors from a specific area of the world. They are not specific to a country or place, but are more common in certain regions rather than others.

Your genetic results from material in the mitochondria match you to a specific haplogroup that can tell you more about where your mother’s side of your lineage is from.

Find your haplogroup

  • Haplogroup A2 is one of the more commonly found haplogroups across the Americas.

Your female ancestor was related to the people that initially inhabited the Americas. This means that you have Native American ancestry.

Haplogroup A2 originated over 16,000 years ago in Asia/Beringia.

  • Haplogroup B2 originated about 21,000 years ago in Beringia(the ancient land bridge between Alaska and Russia), and arrived into the Americas around 13,500 years ago.

Haplogroup B2 is found throughout the Americas. It likely entered the Caribbean as native peoples began to migrate from Central and South America.

Haplogroup B2 can also be found in the islands of the Greater Antilles-Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.

  • Haplogroup C1 originated 24,000 years ago in Central Asia, and is associated with the people who left and migrated to the Americas 12,000 years ago.

Haplogroup C1 is one of the most commonly found haplogroups across the Americas.

It is hypothesized that the C1 haplogroup came to the Caribbean from Central America though there are some C1 groups in Asia and Iceland.

  • You have inherited your mtDNA haplogroup from one female ancestor along your mother’s line.

This female ancestor was related to the people that first inhabited Eastern Africa then later moved throughout Africa. This means that you have African ancestry.

Haplogroup L0 originated 100,000 years ago in Africa.

This haplogroup is one of the most common African haplogroups

This female ancestor was related to the people that initially inhabited Eastern and Central Africa then migrated into other regions of Africa. This means that you have African ancestry.

Haplogroup L1 originated 150,000–170,000 years ago in Africa.

  • You have inherited your mtDNA haplogroup from one female ancestor along your mother’s line.

This female ancestor was related to the people that initially inhabited Western and Central Africa This means that you have African ancestry.

Haplogroup L2 originated 90,000 years ago in Western Africa
